Axios’ Swan to Fox’s Bret Baier: Trump Admin Has ‘Given Up’ On Congress Funding Wall
On Special Report on Fox News Channel Thursday, guest Jonathan Swan of Axios told host Bret Baier that the administration has pretty much abandoned hope of getting wall funding through Congress. Taken with Sen. Lindsey Graham’s (R-SC) very loud noise-making on an emergency declaration, it seems things are headed one direction, and fast.
Baier noted to Swan that the effort to come up with a bipartisan solution on the funding and government shutdown failed, and said “we’re back to ground zero.”
“Yes, and it does seem — from everything I’m hearing from inside the administration, that they’ve basically given up on a congressional solution” agreed Swan. “Which means it’s either declare the emergency, which you know, will take them into a court fight, or OMG, the budget office, has been looking for creative ways to find other pots of money that they can move around.”
“Most of it comes out the Pentagon. Army Corps of Engineers of course is within the DOD budget,” he continued. “But all of these options are politically and legally challenging. But it’s no surprise that he’s looking to tap into these disaster funds. There was a lot of money appropriated by Congress. A lot of it hasn’t been spent and Trump has already said privately to aides that he wants to stop giving money to Puerto Rico.”
“It doesn’t surprise me that that is where they are heading,” Swan said.
