Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger stated that he was “blown away” by Donald Trump’s change of heart in regards to economic dealings with China, as the president recently tweeted his support for a massive Chinese phone company.

Cuomo first asked the Illinois Republican whether Trump’s apparent “softening” on China came in light of turmoil in Asia and the need for allies to combat Pakistan and North Korea’s nuclear ambitions, and if that was correlated with the president voicing his support for ZTE.

“ZTE, the large Chinese phone company, buys a big percentage of individual parts from U.S. companies,” tweeted Trump on Monday. “This is also reflective of the larger trade deal we are negotiating with China and my personal relationship with President Xi.”

“We also have to understand that China is an adversary, and I think long term they’re actually our biggest adversary, whether that’s economic or military said Kinzinger. “I was pretty concerned and a little blown away when the president made his statement about it, and I hope there is more clarification to come because we have got to stand up against this Chinese espionage.”

However, Kinzinger also added that “there’s no doubt that the president has done a lot for America first and American jobs.”
