FBI Director Christopher Wray went before the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday. During his session, Wray was grilled by Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) about the political leanings of various FBI employees.

Listing names, the Texas Congressman asked Wray if he was aware if those FBI employees were “openly speaking against this administration.” Wray defended each of those mentioned.

The Washington Post‘s Philip Bump wrote of the interrogation, “The overall effect of Gohmert’s questioning was reminiscent of efforts in the 1950s to root out Communist infiltrators in U.S. institutions.”

Hours after the session with Wray, Gohmert appeared on The Story to continue to bash the FBI and question their credibility. In a wacky interview with Martha MacCallum, the Texas Congressman and House Judiciary Committee member slammed the Bureau for possibly using the infamous Donald Trump-Russia dossier (which is as yet largely unverified, not “totally false” as Gohmert claims) because it was partially financed by the Hillary Clinton campaign. In so doing, he revisited the theme of his questioning of Wray, that the FBI is politically motivated.

We need to know if [the FBI] took a politically contrived and paid for dossier — that ended up being totally false — and you use that as a basis to go to the foreign intelligence court and get a warrant to surveil members of the opposition presidential election team. If that’s the case, then the FBI has been co-opted and corrupted beyond perhaps even the sorriest days of the FBI, when J. Edgar Hoover was wiretapping Martin Luther King.
