Morning Joe Panel Speculates on Trump’s Mental Health in Response to Concerns About ‘Slurred Speech’
MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” round table on Thursday discussed Donald Trump’s Jerusalem speech in which the president slurred words, and took no qualms in speculating about his mental fitness.
Mediaite flagged the MSNBC conversation that was preceded by a clip from the 1980s of a younger businessman Trump speaking clearly and differently than the president spoke during Wednesday’s announcement on Jerusalem.
Frequent “Morning Joe” guest and MSNBC political analyst Steve Schmidt started by commenting on the president’s speech and saying Trump was “clearly slurring his words.”
“I don’t know what the cause of it is,” Schmidt said, before discussing questions about the president’s stability and fitness.
“And it doesn’t get any better when you see clear impairments. I don’t know. Is that a tooth problem? Is that something else? … We don’t have updates on his health, we don’t know what’s going on,” he said.
“This is the man who commands America’s nuclear arsenal, and that video, that speech, that impairment is chilling,” Schmidt added
The White House responded to the questions about Trump’s slurred speech at the end of his announcement about Jerusalem, saying the president had a dry mouth, the Los Angeles Times reported.
“His throat was dry. There’s nothing to it,” White House spokesman Raj Shah said.
Co-host Mika Brzezinski added on Thursday that she thinks Trump has relied too much on the teleprompter.
“He’s struggling,” host Joe Scarborough replied.
“There was a struggle happening,” Brzezinski agreed.
“Morning Joe” contributor Mike Barnicle said the Mueller investigation’s “success” so far could be having a detrimental effect on Trump’s health as well.
Scarborough wrapped up the conversation by saying he and his fiancée co-host feel bad for Trump, as he has become a different person, for the worst.
“In the beginning of the speech, I looked at Mika and said, ‘Look at him, he’s just not the same person,’” Scarborough said.
